The Speech & Accessibility Laboratory van de afdeling Informatica en Telecommunicatie (http://speech.di.uoa.gr) is een universiteits onderzoekseenheid met de nodige ICT kennis en ervaring via haar meerjarige activiteiten op het gebied van Informatica en Telecommunicatie in relatie tot spraaktechnologie en ICT-toegankelijkheid. Het Lab heeft 14 onderzoekers in dienst en daarnaast een groot aantal Master en PhD studenten, die volledig ondersteund worden op het gebied van techniek en management. Er wordt nauw samengewerkt met de afdeling die zich bezighoudt met studenten met beperkingen. De afdeling heeft een bekende innovatieve gratis online database ontwikkeld met Ondersteunende Technologie voor mensen met een beperking (http://access.uoa.gr/ATHENA). Het Lab heeft een lange ervaring opgedaan in 49 nationale en internationale onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsprojecten op het gebied van : Accessible Computing, Universal Design / Design for All, Spoken Dialogue Human Computer Interaction, Usability, VoiceWeb, Voice Agents, Voice Processing, Analysis and Synthesis of Speech and Singing, Information Technologies for Inclusive Learning, Computer Mediated Interpersonal Communication, Information Systems/ Services and Assistive Technologies for Disabled and Elderly People, Music Computing, Singing Voice Analysis and Synthesis and Gesture-based User Interfaces. Het Lab heeft veel ervaring op het gebied van de Design for All benadering. Het Lab heeft 3 onderzoeksruimtes, 13 werkstations die allemaal verbonden zijn met het LAN van de Spraak Groep en met het Internet via ATHENAnet. De werkstations hebben passende soft- en hardware voor het digitaal processen van akoestische signalen. Daarnaast heeft het Lab een geluiddichte onderzoeksstudio voor hifi opnames, met daarin alle benodigde appartuur om acoustische signalen te bewerken. Ook is er een lab met 15 stoelen met gespecialiseerde hard- en software ten behoeve van PhD. studenten.
